Metrolink train 860, heading from Oceanside to San Bernardino, crawls along Califia Beach in San Clemente, California, on August 21, 2016. I am told that northbound trains leave the San Diego Northern's trackage about a mile or so before this, and must slow to 15 miles per hour in order to engage the Positive Train Control in effect on Metrolink's trackage. And, just about a mile ahead is the stop at the San Clemente Pier, where many passengers who have taken the train to the beach for the day will reboard for the ride back to their homes in the "Inland Empire."
