On a beautiful August evening, a monster-sized stack train drops downgrade through some fantastic Sierra Nevada scenery at Yuba Gap, passing through Tunnels 36 and 35. This train lost power from their DPU near the summit at Norden, and after a long discussion with the mechanical department, the crew decided that they would have to keep their speed down to a crawl due to the loss in dynamic braking, making for a very slow descent of the west slope of Donner Pass. A rough estimate I performed by judging train movement vs. time indicated train speed of about 9-10 MPH at this location.
