When the Canadian Pacific took over the Delaware & Hudson, they quickly made an effort to gain access to the Port of Philadelphia for intermodal service. This access also included the ability to provide carload service jointly with Conrail along the South Columbus Avenue piers. Here a GP9 switches Pier 78 on the Delaware River. Today, Pier 78 remains, but adjacent buildings have fallen while new ones have sprouted up. As a consequence, the trackage shown here has completely changed since this 1992 view.
