Remarks & Notes |
The Southern Railway's crossing of the Blue Ridge Mountains is marked by severe grades and curvature, providing challenges for crews no matter whether they are ascending or descending the famous route. These challenges are evident upon examination of the route alone, but made incredibly apparent when a loaded coal train descends the mountainous railroad. NS 744 is seen here down to a crawl with its entire train wreathed in noxious clouds of brake smoke as the coal loads are held back on their descent towards Old Fort. |
