Conrail local WJAL-19 rolls west under the employee footbridge to the New Jersey Zinc Company’s West Hazard plant in Palmerton, Pennsylvania. Every day for decades, hundreds of workers in the massive zinc smelting plant crossed this footbridge at the beginning and end of their shifts. By the time of this photo in 1986, the smelter was shut down and the facility was an EPA Superfund site.
