Remarks & Notes |
Some 11.8 miles off the Iron Range Subdivision on the DM&IR Wales branch is where they crossed the Cloquet River at Jordan. Based on the condition of the bridge and the sign now posted this is the end of the line today. In it's heyday (1947) the line continued on for another 38 miles through the woods of northern Minnesota serving many small logging facilities and lumber mills evetually ending at the logging community of Forest Center. At the time it was a bustling little community at the end of the Wales Branch. After most of the virgin timber was gone, economics dealt the line a death blow and by 1965 Forest Center was torn down and the line was ripped up back to this point. The Missabe, now CN, has not gone past Jordan since 1982. Here is a shot from the same area back in 2010. http://www.railpictures.net/photo/339461/ |
