Southern Shorthaul Railroad driver Michael Grantham is in charge of the trial run of SSR's newly acquired RL-class locomotive, now SSR RL304. The unit had been placed in service in Lithgow the day previous and is part of a 26-unit purchase by the SSR that also saw C-class motors acquired, as well as multiple Alco-family variants. The RL 304 is leading the "Kelso Flyer" train, SSR #8145, as it heads from Bathurst, NSW to Port Botany. Behind the trial unit is SSR G-class locomotives G513 and G514, as well as GM class GM10. The RL class is essentially the same as the US SD40 and was remanufactured by Morrison-Knudsen Australia and National Railway Equipment.
