Remarks & Notes |
A train from Delhi slowly rolls through North Redwood, MN. The small stone monument along the tracks beneath the tree marks where the Minneapolis & St Louis Railway depot once stood. A young man named Richard W Sears was the station agent here in the late 19th century. The story goes that Sears entered into an agreement with a wholesaler to sell a shipment of gold watches himself after they were refused by a local retailer. His quick success selling these watches to other station agents as well as many of the locals prompted him to move to Minneapolis and then Chicago as he began to sell his watches by catalog and mail order to predominantly rural customers. The catalog mail order business of Sears, Roebuck, & Co. thrived and he was able to retire at the age of 44. |
