Amtrak train #73, the Piedmont, passes through Cary, North Carolina, on October 25, 2016. The train, heading from Raleigh to Charlotte, is led by RNCX F59PHI 1797, and has RNCX 1755 on the rear. The locomotives and cars are owned by North Carolina's Department of Transportation, and are leased to Amtrak for this service. The engines are numbered for the years the cities they are named for were founded: RNCX 1755 is named for the "City of Salisbury" and RNCX 1797 is named "City of Asheville".
Three north-south routes run through North Carolina. Auto Train comes by, too. Also, the State of North Carolina sponsors the Piedmont service and supports the Carolinian.
