Alaskan Nights
As summer wanes the nights finally begin to get dark and the brilliance of the northern sky can be seen. Knowing that Aurora were forecast on this Friday night I packed up the truck with the wife, the dog, the camera gear and a few road beers and drove 20 miles out to Birchwood where I knew the ARR had the QAP gravel train tied down for the weekend. Then I waited. Eventually the northern lights showed low on the horizon and the stars were spectacular. This shot was taken a bit after 3 AM Saturday morning and the signals are lit on the adjacent mainline for the a northbound early Saturday morning run of the AS&G gravel train that started earlier than normal so it could load and get off the branch before the morning run of the special state fair train that was to be on the branch this same weekend. |
