Making its maiden voyage to Canada's west coast, CN ES44AC 2979 leads train Q199 through English, a few miles east of Jasper on CN's Edson Sub. This unit (part of the 2976-2983 series) is a "Tier 4 Credit Unit" from GE, meaning the locomotive is essentially a Tier 3 emissions-equipped locomotive built after the Jan. 1, 2015 implementation date for Tier 4 emissions. General Electric was able to generate and bank credits by the use of its Energy Saving Design Features such as Distributed Power and Consist Manager on existing GE locomotives. These credits can then be applied to new locomotives to offset the difference between the differing emission requirements of Tier 3 and Tier 4. Any locomotive built using credits will be labeled as such on the builders plate on the locomotive.
