The 1990s were a great time to be out trackside. There were still plenty of locomotives in AT&SF, C&NW, D&RGW and SP colors, rolling stock still bore the road names of myriad lines and traffic was burgeoning. Indeed, some routes even retained the nostalgic remnants of early 20th century signaling, as evidenced by the NP-era semaphores that populated Montana Rail Link's route along the Clark Fork west of Missoula.
