NS mine run J22 with an oddball set of UP and KCS SD70 variants rolls under the cover of darkness through the town of Wayne, WV heading for Alpha Natural Resources' Rockspring Mine near East Lynn for loading. The branch from Ceredo to Wayne was once part of the original N&W mainline between Williamson and Kenova, WV, while the line south of Wayne to Lemore was abandoned in the 1930's in favor of the low-grade Big Sandy Extension along the Tug Fork and Big Sandy Rivers which now constitutes the Kenova District mainline today (the old main from Naugatuck to Lenore is now part of the Lenore Branch) No less than 6 months after this photo was taken, WARN notices were issued by ANR to over 400 workers at the East Lynn complex and the mine was subsequently idled indefinitely, leaving these rails rusting away to this day.
