Remarks & Notes
The Bergen Hill Tunnels

There have been no less than a dozen sets of railroad tunnels or cuts that have pierced Bergen Hill, the last barrier between New Jersey and the Hudson River. None, however, are more well known that the tunnels that are actually known as the Bergen Hill Tunnels. The first of the two two-track tunnels was completed by The Morris & Essex Railroad in 1876. The Delaware, Lackawanna & Western, lessor of the M&E, built a second parallel tunnel in 1909 to serve the two-rear-old Hoboken Terminal. Here New Jersey Transit U34CH 4164 and control car 5118 lead two diesel-propelled trains under the wires through the M&E tunnel and into Hoboken.
