Union Pacific Railroad's venerable 1944 ALCO FEF-3 4-8-4 rounds the curve at Menoken Jct. with UP Train PFBKC2 15 from Fairbury, NE bound for Kansas City Union Station this afternoon, and ultimately Memphis for the Big River Crossing Opening on the 22nd.
This is 844's first trip through this area since 2012, and is running on a stretch of railroad it operated on in revenue service on today's UP Kansas Sub. The line leading off to the left is the UP Salina Sub., the former KP Line to Denver, another line this engine frequented in the steam days.
The 800 is the second active 4-8-4 I've seen in the past week. The previous Saturday I was in Minnesota chasing Milwaukee Road 261; also on home rails.
