Remarks & Notes |
Home Creek, Virginia is the Summit of the stiff 1.77% Climb from Weller Yard to the Raitt Tunnel. The grade under the locomotives is leveling out and entering a 9 degree turn before the plunge into the Raitt Tunnel. The train behind the locomotives is hung over one of the steepest sections of the railroad, and it takes 3 big AC pusher locomotives working hard on the rear to beat gravity... The coal originates from one of the most productive mining regions in Appalachia. The large Buchanan mining complex served by this rail route, is one of the largest producers of Metallurgical coal in the the United States. |
