“Saddle Up” This crewman is reporting for duty on MARC GP39H-2 74 at Washington Union Station in the afternoon of March 14, 1988. His train, MARC 254, is the earliest afternoon departure (5:00 p.m.) from WUS operating over the commuter agency’s “Camden Line” (B&O) to Baltimore.
MARC 74 is the former B&O GP40 3710 (EMD, 02/1969), rebuilt in 12/1987 to GP39-2 standards with a Cummins HEP package. The entire 6-unit series (MARC 70-75) was rebuilt by Morrison-Knudsen between 11/1987 and 08/1988 from former GP40s: 70-72 are ex-CR (3062, 3066, 3243); 73-74 are ex-B&O (3703, 3710); and 75 is ex-MILW (2050).
