A crew member rakes the cinders and coals from the ash pan of Canadian Pacific No. 2317. This removes the excess accumulated ash and keeps the firebox draft properly flowing allowing oxygen to the burning coals. Today, No. 2317's firebox is cold, and the locomotive sits in the roundhouse at Steamtown in Scranton, PA awaiting a hoped for return to service pending completion of another project, 17 years and counting, another 4-6-2, locomotive No. 3713 of Boston and Maine heritage.
