RIO PUERCO NM Sept 11 1980 -- Amtrak SDP40F 506 leads the Southwest Limited under New Mexico skies on Santa Fe's Transcon. When Amtrak took over the train from Santa FE it retained its Super Chief name. In 1974 Santa Fe decided Amtrak was not providing the correct level of service and required Amtrak to rename the train whereupon it became the Southwest Limited. In 1984 Santa Fe determined the level of service had improved enough to allow Amtrak to rename the train the Southwest Chief.
