Remarks & Notes |
In August of 1956 famed railroad photographer O. Winston Link captured a scene at this very spot at night using his lighting set up as kids played in Hawksbill Creek as a Norfolk and Western train powered by a steam locomotive rumbled overhead. It has become most likely his most iconic image.
Fast forward 60 years. By chance after a day outing in the Blue Ridge Mountains on nearby Skyline Drive I found out Norfolk Southern manifest train 16T was heading North down the Valley towards Luray. The scene has changed dramatically since the 1950's as a linear nature park now lines the south bank of the creek and has altered the creek bed as well as a newer road bridge.
The train approached and my two twin girls began to wave and finally the lead engine began to cross the same railroad bridge that Link captured more than half a century ago. |
