Silverton under the stars. It's a shame that Winston Link never made it out to the Colorado Narrow Gauge. His flashbulb-lit scenes in the high country might have looked a bit like this. Here's our D&RGW K-28 overnighting in front of the iconic Silverton Depot on a very chilly fall night in October. This image resulted from an impromptu night photo shoot by about a dozen of the participants from Dave Gross' 2016 Durango & Silverton Charter. This image is a long-duration (about 80 sec.) exposure that utilized celestial lighting (star trails are visible) as well as some hand-held pops with Nikon speedlights to light the train and the depot. I was actually pretty amazed by the results, considering the fact that this shot was a total experiment.
The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad and the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad are all that remains of the legendary Denver & Rio Grande Western narrow gauge system. Here you'll find some of my favorites from these two beautiful railways.
