Remarks & Notes |
Examples of coaching vehicles that remain in their original South African Railways livery (Red & Grey) are like hens teeth to find now. This is S.A.R. Caboose Type ZO-5 No. 14877. This type of vehicle was generally used as living quarters for railway personnel when visiting remote places for work purposes on the South African Railways network. This particular example is kitted out for ear testing (it has been soundproofed) and in its later life it was donated to the South African Railways Church. Shortly after this photo was taken it was involved in a shunting accident and knocked through the stop block and into the concrete platform behind it - the RANGEER VERSIGTIG (Afrikaans for SHUNT CAREFULLY) notice on the side of No. 14877 seems quite ironic. No. 14877 has since been shunted out into an adjacent yard and it's future is anyone's guess. |
