Train #21 from Detroit to Muskegon is shown arriving at the Birmngham station. You will note that the platform was level with the car floors and so passengers were not required to climb steps to board a coach. The waiting area where the people are standing was reached by taking a tunnel under the tracks from the station's waiting room. There was a sign directing passengers to the two platforms. It read "East Bound" and "West Bound". This was a bit confusing since the tracks ran north and south in Birmingham. Since most travelers were going to Chicago, that would be west of Birmingham. Eastbound passengers would be headed to Detroit which is east of Chicago.
