Remarks & Notes
After rush hour and the vestiges of the westbound passenger fleet – Nos. 31 and 49, "The Spirit of St. Louis" and "The Broadway Limited" - had departed, freight activity on the Main Line began to increase. In the summer of 1968 I held second trick at Paoli Block Station and my Triumph Bonneville would have been parked across the yard tracks at the crew room. The passenger trains had departed from Paoli station with one or two GG-1s pulling to get underway for a run out the mainline to Lancaster and Harrisburg. Conductors and porters in the tuscan red passenger cars would wave from the dutch doors as consists smoothly picked up speed. For a time the wires had been de-energized between Frankford Jct. and Camden requiring diesel power for the trip across the Delaware River. Thus internal combustion power smoked up the catenary on trains such as Camden-Enola freight P-9. Here a GP30, proudly showing off its timeless keystone, leads a U25B, GP9B and GP35. Helpers would cut-off on the fly as they passed the interlocking. The pantographs of an inbound Paoli Local with MP-54s can be seen behind P-9s power in this “operators' view” from a summer's eve, not so long ago.
