In July 1973, Amtrak No. 5, with an ex-UP E9 on the point, meets an eastbound SP drag in the hole at Colfax, CA. SP often put helpers behind the caboose to assist eastbounds and westbounds over Donner Pass. Most often during the 70s, those helpers were either SD45s or tunnel motors.
