One thing about Midwest winter's is things get screwed up and late. As is the case today as Caleb and I braved the cold weather to chase the South Crew back towards Waterloo. This is normally an overnight operation, but extremely cold weather has the train late and running 10 mph for the whole trip out of Cedar Rapids. Here the job passes over the Rock Creek a couple miles south of La Porte City.
Freight Cowls are standard locomotives that have a hood that extends the full width of the locomotive. Sadly, most Freight Cowls have been retired, but a few still run on short lines.
Motive Power Industries and GMD of Canada have rebuilt the EMD F40PH. These rebuild F40s are slowly fading, but some can be seen in California and Canada.
