Remarks & Notes |
One of the three experimental DB BR 403 Inter City EMUs later hired to Lufthansa passes Bacharach forming the 09.46 Dusseldorf Hbf to Frankfurt Airport service. Originally delivered to the DB in 1973, the four car units did not last long in IC service due to their inflexibility and ceased running in 1979. But in 1981 Lufthansa hired them to replace short haul flights and to serve Cologne and Bonn en-route from Dusseldorf to Frankfurt providing four return trips per day. The service finished in 1993 when the EMUs were requiring a mid-life overhaul. with their striking livery they became know as 'Donald Duck' units. An attempt at preserving one unit was started but appears to have stalled due to the hi-expense, the original reason for their withdrawal. |
