The announcement late in 2016 that Southern Pacific 4-8-4 4449 would be making a trip to Bend, OR, for the first time in 5 years had us planning a long weekend trip that saw me visiting a West Coast state for the first time in 30+ years.
After a full weekend of chasing SP 4449, we had booked a red-eye flight back to NJ on Monday night, giving us an extra day to explore the Columbia River Gorge. With a work window shutting down the BNSF, we killed time on the UP, where our waiting was rewarded with three shots of this 4-car UP passenger special headed east from Portland, seen here crossing the Western Lake causeway near Mosier, OR.
