A Green line train is southbound between 35th St. station and Indiana Ave. station. This is almost the end of the city's first elevated, the 4 1/2 mile Alley 'L' which opened in 1892 powered by steam locomotives. Despite the "alley" name, the "L" was not build over the alley, but next to it on private property. Most Chicago's "L" are built that way. A third track was added in 1907 as shown by a different upright in this picture.
