Amtrak Helps Out: In mid January of 2018, mudslides along the coast south of Santa Barbara forced the closure of Highway 101 for more than a week, driving many people to turn to Amtrak for travel to and from the greater Santa Barbara area. To help out with the large volume of passengers, CalTrans sent several passenger cars and locomotives south from Oakland to be added to Pacific Surfliner trains. Here, we see train 796 shortly after leaving San Luis Obispo as it heads through the Edna Valley. One additional locomotive and three cars have been added to this train.
