On a beautiful mid-day in March 1974, a big crowd is on hand at the Stockton Amtrak Depot to witness the inaugural run of San Joaquin service. Amtrak 417 West, train No. 710, is the first regularly scheduled passenger train through Stockton in years--since the start of Amtrak. On the point of the first train is an ex-UP E9 and an ex-SP FP7, both equipped with boilers. The white-washed depot is a gorgeous ex-Santa Fe structure.
