The BNSF Gateway Sub Dispatcher had her work cut out for her on this day. A southbound military train had been holding at Almanor for over an hour as UP Omaha Dispatcher 57 had no room to take the train on the Canyon Subdivision. Therefore, the military train had to wait for two northbounds, an oil train and a manifest. With the military train crew quickly approaching their twelve hour work limit, the decision was made to take the train down to Crescent Mills. There, a patch crew would be called out of Quincy and asked to take the train only ten miles down the line to Keddie. With another six southbounds between Halls Flatt and Klamath Falls, both northbound trains will be swimming against the current as they battled not only traffic congestion, but also cold winter weather. In this shot, the first northbound, an empty oil train, skirts around the military train at Almanor on a snowy winter day.
