Remarks & Notes |
Railroading out here isn't easy. The Feather River Route cuts through some of the most treacherous terrain in the Western United States. The tracks often parallel huge walls of loose rock, creating the potential for rock slides at any time. The railroad has resorted to slide fences in some places. If a rock slide does occur, the fence will be "tripped" and the near by signals will display a stop indication. This system helps prevent trains from encountering rock slides without warning. Union Pacific 7477 guides a heavy coal train passed the slide fencing at Rich Bar, California. |
