Tripleheaded silver E-units led by E9 9988B accelerate west through La Vergne, Illinois, with Burlington train 31, the Seattle-bound Empire Builder, which they will pass on to the Great Northern in Minneapolis. A separate section of this train carried the cars of the Northern Pacific's North Coast Limited to the Twin Cities. By next summer this will be a BN operation, and a year after that Amtrak will be in place.
