While southern Vermont and western Massachusetts / Connecticut were getting battered by a classic nor’easter snow storm, Genesee & Wyoming canceled freight trains on several New England railroads, including the Providence & Worcester, Connecticut Southern and New England Central. Only one through train operated overnight amid heavy accumulating snow, NECR train 323, running from Palmer, MA, (#611 crew Palmer to Brattleboro) to St. Albans, VT. Despite lesser amounts of snow the farther north the train progressed, it was still winter railroading. Led by NECR SD40M-2s 3474, 3475 and 3478, the 323 passed the Randolph, VT Depot at 0135 hrs with heavy, steady snow continuing to fall.
