Minturn yard—1985 Rio Grande’s Minturn yard at the western base of a three percent climb over Tennessee Pass was an important location on the railroad’s map. It was a crew change point and a home to helper sets and crews working up the steep grade east of town. In this view, Rio Grande EMD GP40-2 leads an eastbound freight waiting on the main line for a westbound freight to arrive after crossing the pass on July 11, 1985. The eastbound train already has its helpers cut in, and with a clear signal will hit the grade with gusto, leaving this Colorado mountain town in its wake.
