Remarks & Notes |
When Southern Pacific construction crews arrived at Caliente in 1874 the question of just how to conquer the Tehachapi Mountains quickly came to the forefront. So daunting was the task that Caliente, then Allan's Camp, became SP's southern terminus for a year. In 1875 civil engineer William Hood envisioned a way to take the railroad over the mountain and 142 years later his vision is still the primary link between Northern and Southern California for today's Union Pacific and BNSF. As a eastbound Union Pacific manifest patiently waits in 'downtown' Caliente a westbound BNSF train carefully makes Hood's dramatic decent from Bealville. |
