Remarks & Notes

The Trans Natal on a hot and very humid summer morning (overnight economy class passenger train from Johannesburg to Durban - and return), headed by Class 6E1, E1510. The train, pictured here climbing the hill up from Frere to Chieveley (contra flow, which really upset the photo opportunity plans), was running very late, having left Durban the evening before. Unfortunately one of the original two units had failed at Mooi River and the train was delayed while a replacement unit and crew were sent up from Durban to assist (see third unit is dead). E1510 was upgraded and converted in 2015 to Class 18E Series 2 and renumbered 18-845 and is now part of the Transnet Freight Rail fleet.
