Because of a derailment on the BNSF Ottumwa Subdivision in Ottumwa, Iowa, Amtrak 6 needed an alternate route to Chicago. Union Pacific stepped in and UP 8310 was added to the head end of Amtrak 6 in Omaha, NE. Adding the ACe in Omaha delayed the train by almost two hours later than it already was. The crew and passengers were anxious to make up time, so 6 was hitting speeds above 65mph through rural Iowa.
