Westbound Conrail train ALCG (Allentown – Corning) rolls through the sprawling acreage that was once the Lehigh Valley’s Packerton yard. The yard, located between Lehighton and Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania, was once a major classification point for the LV. Postwar traffic declines lessened its necessity, and the 1972 CNJ withdrawal from Pennsylvania gave the more modern Allentown yard to the LV, putting the final nail in Packerton’s coffin. To the left is the hulk of the massive Packerton car shops.
