A Delaware & Hudson Potomac Yard train prepares to head west from Allentown yard on the East Penn line. Within a little over a year, many elements of this scene will disappear as part of Conrail’s Allentown Yard reconstruction project. The tracks to the right are receiving tracks for the heavy side hump. This hump will be levelled, and all classification will be done of the light side. These tracks will all be gone, as will R Tower, seen in the center of the photo. The D&H inheritance of 44 diesels from the Lehigh Valley and the Reading as part of the Conrail formation has also made four unit lashups of matched lightning stripe units very unusual. This is one of the few that I saw after Conrail was formed.
