“Are You Doing Your Part (?)” CS/WM caboose (90)1803, in the green safety paint scheme, along with CS/WM (90)1863 (partly visible) in standard Chessie System attire, gets a Sunday off, and awaits its next assignment at the former WM Hanover engine terminal on July 27, 1986. Both are WM class C-13A.
Built 10/20/1936 at WM’s Hagerstown shops, 1803 was one of the first steel cabooses rostered by the Western Maryland Railway.
It was one of 23 Chessie System safety cabooses, and one of only four rostered by the WM (the others being 1802, 1806 and 1811). Its first safety paint scheme (10/15/1976) had a relatively small white banner for the slogan, barely wider than the cupola, and a large, centered Chessie System logo. In the second iteration (05/1982), the slogan (sans question mark) and banner was extended to nearly the full length of the carbody, the “Chessie System” herald was reduced in size and shifted toward the end of the car, and the cross/track safety emblem was added.
Despite being officially retired on 10/19/1988, 1803 remained in active service at Hanover until at least 1994. Today it resides at the B&O Railroad Museum. Although it wore the green safety paint upon arrival at the museum, it was ultimately repainted into WM’s RWB scheme, which is also historically valid, as it did, in fact, wear that before the safety program began.
