When the Modoc Line was closed to through traffic in 1987 and 1988, Southern Pacific ran a train from Klamath Falls to Alturas and return twice a week. The Alturas Turn carried interchange to/from the Great Western's operation on the old Lakeview Branch, and it also performed any local switching needed around Alturas. In this image, the train is about to start the six mile, 2.2% descent down Howard's Gulch to the floor of the Warm Springs Valley at Canby.
