At Shourab in northern Iran, the Trans-Iranian Railway uses spirals to lose elevation as the line works down towards the Caspian Sea. Here, at over 2,000 meters elevation, a descending passenger train is held in check by a pair of EMD's. It will shortly enter a tunnel, emerging on the track visible above the second unit.
