292.2 Miles From San Francisco. There are still traces of the Western Pacific Railroad hidden deep in the mountains of Northern California. Out here, searchlight signals still dominate the landscape, while throughout the rest of the country, they have been largely replaced. Just below the signal head, there is a milepost marker with "2922". This marker was originally installed by the WP and informs railroaders of their exact location. For the WP, everything was measured from the San Francisco Ferry Building. San Francisco was Mile Post (MP) 0, while Oakland was MP 4, Sacramento MP 139 and finally Salt Lake City MP 928. In this shot, a Union Pacific work train heads west along the old Feather River Route, splitting a pair of searchlight signals at Massack, 292.2 miles from San Francisco.
