Early carbody U30B no. 5604 grinds part of a Portland bound freight to the top of Tacoma hill with a slug set. The power will set off the block of cars, then drop back down the hill for the remainder of the train, repeat the climb and put the train back together. This move took several hours to reach Centralia which is why they had a hard time competing with UP and BN which could cover the same territory at water level in about 1 to 1.5 hours.
