Remarks & Notes |
"White Rail at Rye"
Metro North train 1357 takes the curve just east of Rye Station while heading west towards Grand Central Terminal. The rails on this curve were painted white by the Track Department as a test to determine if this method of temperature reduction would be suitable for other curves on the Metro North system. White paint reduces caloric energy (heat) absorbed by the rails and in turn reduces expansion during the summer. This practice is widely used by railroads in Europe and other parts of the world. |
