Santa Fe 5967 East negotiates multiple reverse curves as it climbs out of Caliente, CA. The grade here is intense, and it will take all the tractive effort of this freight to head uphill as its cars negotiate the tight 10-degree curve here. Southern Pacific's civil engineers laid down a route up Caliente Creek that was relatively easy, but for which SP and ATSF would pay dearly, including as a result of the tremendous flood of March 1983.
