Amtrak quickly replaced the ex-NYC electrics that handled Empire Service trains in and out of Grand Central Terminal with borrowed Penn Central FL9s. PC-patched 5001 was on its way north through Spuyten Duyvil station in the Bronx with an Albany-bound train. As NH 2001, it was one of EMDs two original FL9 demonstrators.
