Remarks & Notes |
An ETR job leans into a tight 'S' curve as it moves stored LPG tanks between Texas Yard and a former Honeywell spur. These are the southern most railway tracks in Canada and see about 1-2 trains a week. Amherstburg is home to about 21000 and is located on the eastern shore of the Detroit River near its mouth with Lake Erie. Windsor/Detroit is about a 25 minute drive north of here. Amherstburg is the southern terminus of ETR's roughly 70km network of rail that snakes through Windsor and western Essex County in Southwestern Ontario. This area used to have an abundance of customers for the railroad and was the western terminus of the original routing for the famous Canada Southern Railway (CASO) before MCR bought the line and routed it to Windsor in 1890. After decades of mergers and buyouts, Conrail became the owner of the CASO and continued to operate locals to Amherstburg up until the late 1970s when they abandoned the line and tore it up in the 1980s. ETR itself used to have about 5 or 6 online customers in the area with only the Diageo Crown Royal plant remaining online today. The remaining rail infrastructure is used to store LPG tanks. There is hope though for more rail need in the area. Amherstburg made a short list for Xinyi Glass Canada, a Chinese glass manufacturer that wants to build a large facility in Southern Ontario to serve the auto industry. If Amherstburg's bid wins, they will build on the former General Chemical/Honeywell property and will receive rail service. Lets keep our fingers crossed that this comes to fruition! |
